Auditory Stimulation: Working for a Nuclear Free City - Silent Melody

So, Otakon in a week. My roommate's sister stole my camera, but I put in some overtime to buy a new one. Pictures will exist as usual.

I'm working on two more G-Kill crack crossovers (one of them involves zombies and one of them involves swords, but they're mutually exclusive) as a way of getting over month-long writer's block in the first one. Still, I think I'll head over to Staples and get a photocopier to spit out a Patriots-verse chapter as my usual "bring something bizarre and cracktastic to whore out with at the fanfiction panels" sample. I just like it best. (Plus it contains Metal Gear, which in turn contains Japan, which makes it appropriate for Otakon.)

Also, I'm bald now. Heavy Weapons Guy costume is complete, though pretty hodgepodge. After three years straight of ridiculous costuming, I decided I needed a break.

...I am so bald.

...or is that, With great power, comes great insanity?

So, while I really should be working on at least two fics and assing myself into finally putting in effort to get a driver's liscense, let's have a long-winded review of inFAMOUS. )

Christ, I almost want to say "That is so fucking awesome," but the simulated terrorist is a disgruntled war-vet pissed off at the government? Raids on marijuana fields? Could we at least tone down the jingoism?

Fic - Generation Kill / Metal Gear Solid - "No Place to Hide"

April 24th, 2009 (10:04 am)

Title: No Place to Hide
Author: [info]alhazred
Pairing/characters: Fick, Colbert, Person
Rating: R
Words: 26, 566
Disclaimer: This work of fiction is not for profit; Metal Gear Solid © Kojima Productions/Konami, G-Kill © HBO/Evan Wright et al.
Summary: SERE: Survival, Evasion, Rescue, Escape. Being gay in the military is hard enough, being gay in the military and a POW is even worse...even if it's just a drill.
Warnings: Torture, but not very explicit and not very nightmarish, content wise. It's not even half as bad as, say, 24.
Written for [info]lgbtfest

Prompt: #70 - Any fandom, any characters, any story where there is a character in the closet both literally and figuratively.

This is number three in the Patriots-verse, but it's largely G-Kill centric save for a couple minor characters and one small scene, and is also another prequel. This fic should easily stand alone, the most egregious WTF moment if you don't know both fandoms will be that the President of the United States wasn't George Bush in 2004, on account of the alternate timeline Metal Gear runs on. Inspired by an episode of The Unit.

Auditory Stimulation: Metal Gear Solid 4 - Father & Son

I've been sidelined with a cold off and on for about two weeks now; it's been the annoying kind where the biggest sign is congestion, but the entire nose-blowing part turns out to be an exercise in futility for days on end to the point where I thought it was just allergies (I have these in spades) with the season change, until the entire rest of the usual problems appear upon waking up one morning, then it lasts for awhile, then the whole thing repeats, blegh.

The natural upshot of this is that I've accomplished nothing at all productive; [info]shades_children is probably wondering why the bloody hell I haven't sent her anything after bugging the crap out of her for beta purposes for a few days straight; it's like the physical needs of writing all cause agony when I'm sick, overly-sensitive eyes being the absolute worst. That also makes videogames an exercise in torture, although it's kind-of lethargic messing around with my new screen's backlight setting to find a happy medium between "playable" and "OH GOD IT HURTS WHY AM I HURTING MYSELF."

For the record, sudden increased sensitivity to light means that Metal Gear Online and Left 4 Dead are safe; Team Fortress 2 and Modern Warfare are most decidedly not.

Speaking of war games, this is something to keep an eye on. There's already the kind of butthurt you'd expect, from "this is so tasteless!" to "this is American propoganda designed to make you like killing civilians!" Given that the brains behind it are actual veterans of Fallujah, I'm taking a "wait and see if it's well-done" approach. I don't consider the actual idea tasteless, myself, not when Modern Warfare can get away with a player-character who is invading Iran and a Russian Federation with worse insurgency problems than the Middle East has ever had in reality, but there's certainly an expected level of "Needs to be done right" that's higher than the average game.

Auditory Stimulation: World of Goo - The Best of Days

Seriously, get this game. It's adorable, it's easy to pick up (and will also make your head asplode in later levels) and it's epic. I got it when it was on the Steam weekend sale for 75% off, but it's easily worth the full twenty-dollar price tag.

Music! MUSIC!

Mostly for the benefit of [info]thorne_scratch who off-handedly asked for music. But hey, Yousendit doesn't expire until after like, seven downloads or somesuch, so I figured this might as well go here. All...three of you will probably either already have or will like most of this.

Masterplan / Spirit Never Die - I'm usually not one for motivational...things, but this song just feels like the purpose is to be awesome using motivational...ness as a tool for its awesomeness. I first heard this on a compilation of finishers from Eternal Champions, a little-known fighting game that died before its time due to various silly reasons, mostly the kind of logic that killed Sega as a whole. The funny thing is, if you know the plot, and the character backstories, the song fits perfectly with the wanton violence that makes Mortal Kombat look tame.

Rev Theory / Voices - Randy Orton's new entrance theme. I was really hoping it was some sort of foreshadowing that his character was going to take a turn for the honest-to-god mentally deranged ala Mankind, but sadly, the writers haven't been that clever in a long, long time.

The Union Underground / Revolution Man - Has a rather awesome music video with unfortunate censoring in the lyrics. Can't we even reference the Beatles and drug use at once without upsetting moral guardians? Jesus fucking christ on a pogostick eating a cracker.

Audioslave / Shadow on the Sun - Another song from a band that doesn't exist anymore. It's not even a particularly good song, but it has earworm qualities. First heard it on this trailer for World in Conflict, where it's a rather bizarre but ultimately effective juxtoposition between this type of music and WiC's specific alternate-history storyline. The fact that WiC does it better than the things it takes inspiration from (I'm looking at you, Patrick Swayze,) helps too.

Metal Gear Solid 4 / Love Theme - Plenty of things are titled this, most of them lame. In the spirit of my recent crack crossover, this is the music that plays during one of the scenes "One True Patriot" is based on, specifically the last part of the fight against Outer Haven, where the Missouri is starting to lose ground and everyone is on the verge of being overrun at their positions while Snake is crawling through a giant microwave oven. Also plays during the intro when Snake narrates about the state of the world and the war economy, giving it a nice, if rather bizarre, bookendish quality.

Flying Steps / We Are Electric - I want to make a music video set to this with inFAMOUS when it comes out.

Fuuuuuck yeah. And I totally called Vamp as one of the new additions, too. I see the old Socom pistol near the end, but ogod the new gear. It's like Saints Row 2 and MGO had sex and the new clothing options are the result.

I wonder if Snake carrying Kerotan in the stinger at the end means anything...

I have no sense of scale.

Do you know how I know I have no sense of scale? I decided the thing I would blow this year's tax return on would be a 37" TV. I just couldn't find a good 24" monitor that had everything I needed, the absolute best choice is something I would've had to import from England. When I happened across a 37" TV that exceeds my needs, for only a hundred dollars more than I planned on spending on a monitor, I said, "Oh, what the hell, why not?"

I thought it would fit on my computer desk.

I even went out to Home Depot and bought a chunk of wood to stick under said desk, figuring it would weight in at...a bit more than the desk can readily handle.

I really have no sense of scale.

...

I'm going to spam a little from the next fic in the G-Kill/MGS La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo Patriots-verse (which is actually a prequel) so I can distract everyone from my sillyness think about it instead of the oh my god apocalyptic re-arranging I need to finagle in this room.

It's the fact that there's sort-of a coherent plot going on here that sells me. Michael Jackson as the protagonist of every videogame ever is amusing enough; the fact that it eventually involves a larger-than-Earth Zangief and E. Honda with Princess Peach as the evil mastermind just makes it even better.
